Climate events no longer have an extraordinary character and have now become recurrent. Per rispondere a una delle più grandi sfide del nostro tempo servono sforzi collettivi, a partire da una partnership pubblico-privato. È quanto emerso nell’ambito del convegno “Catastrophic climate events – how we can defend ourselves.” organized by the expert witness firms Sintesi, Studio Italia Service, All Consulting Group and Cincotti & Company, with the support of sponsors Protos, Belfor, Dottor Grandine and Betacom and the organizational management of the company RG; held last Feb. 8 in Venice, at the Procuratie of St. Mark’s Square, at the headquarters of The Human Safety Net, the Assicurazioni Generali Foundation whose mission is to unleash the potential of people in vulnerable situations, helping them to improve the living conditions of their families and the entire community.
A discussion among experts from the scientific, technical, institutional and insurance sectors on the importance of preventing the consequences of extreme natural events in Italy. If the inevitability of climate change has now entered, on a global level, into the common view, both on the basis of scientific data regarding the warming of the planet compared to the last century, and in the effects of the increasing relevance, in terms of frequency and magnitude, of the extreme events that result from it, there is a need to rethink profoundly the ways in which, from different points of view, the impacts and consequences on the population, the social aspect and the economic fabric are addressed.
The initiative was attended by Minister of Justice Carlo Nordio and Minister of Environment and Energy Security Gilberto Pichetto Fratin, as well as climatologist and popularizer of science Prof. Luca Mercalli.
Welcoming the audience was Philippe Donnet, Group Ceo of Assicurazioni Generali, who then left the stage to the speeches of the two Ministers, before the talk that involved, among others, Giancarlo Fancel, Country Manager and Ceo of Generali Italia. It was the manager who leads the Lion in Italy who recalled the commitment of the Company and its Agents alongside families and businesses affected by bad weather in the last year and a half in the Peninsula: more than 155 thousand claims handled, more than 900million euros in liquidated damages and more than 135 thousand families and 20 thousand businesses helped between 2023 and 2024. A decisive contribution to the resilience of the economy of vast areas of the country.
During the discussion–in front of more than 200 people, with a large representation of Generali Italia agents, and guests from the insurance brokerage, technical-engineering, and post-event remediation and repair sectors–the introduction of mandatory insurance coverage for companies was also addressed.
A virtuous example of public-private collaboration to mitigate the effects of climate change and close the country’s insurance gap.
